Sevabharathi, is a Not for Profit Voluntary Organisation which was formed in the year 1982 with the objective of giving a new direction for the service activities in the Social, Cultural, Educational and Medical domains. The organisation has been rendering selfless service in these areas with the firm belief in the mantra ‚ManavaSewa, MadhavaSewa‛ (Service to Humanity is Service to God), covering various parts of India.
Sevabharathi carrying out its service activities based on the ideals propounded by great men like Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo and Mahatma Gandhi, in order to bring out social integration and all round development of the nation. Sevabharathi's activities are spread in all the states and union territories of India. The volunteers of Sevabharathi today are involved in more than one lack service projects in remote areas of the country. Volunteers have been the first to reach many natural calamities, be it floods, accidents or other natural calamities like Earth quake or Tsunami. Sevabharathi is serving the economically weaker and socially neglected sections of the society range from medical assistance, library, hostel, basic education, adult education, vocational and industrial training, up-liftment of street children and the lepers.
Through these projects Sevabharathi aims at making the underprivileged sections of the society self-reliant in all aspects of their lives. What makes Sevabharathi unique is its presence in all the states of Indian union. These enable the organization to focus attention on the poorest and most disadvantaged communities.
Even though it's the state in the peak of educational development, recent happenings and incidents in Kerala briefed out that the humanity is in hunger. But, there are people who deem the sorrows of the slums, the pangs of hunger, the agony of disease, and the helplessness of orphan hood, as their own. They can identify the needs and provide the right service at the right moment for nothing but self-satisfaction. But being single could not feed a large bunch of lower income and marginalized group and hence organizations were formed out with the help of likeminded volunteers.
Sevabharathi, Keralais one such organization of likeminded people in Thiruvananthapuramto cater the needs of the economically and physically challenged people through its various modes of operations. The heartfelt donors and the self-less volunteers made the organization to function in a well-equipped manner through the latest project, 'Ananthakripa', the organization can extend a helping hand to the poor and financially back drivenpeople who is in need of the best medical care in the Thiruvananthapuram through free accommodation and subsidized pharmacy facilities.
The veteran social worker and the then RSS Sarsanghachalak Shri Balasaheb Deoras addressed a mammoth gathering of volunteers at Ambedkar Stadium, Delhi, on 8 April 1978, where he called upon them to start service activities among the neglected sections of the society. He asked the volunteers to raise self-respect of the socially and economically deprived people of India. This speech is considered to be the initiating first step that led tostarting the Sevabharathi.Although the volunteers of RSS and other allied organization's had been informally working for the betterment of the under-privileged, it was opined that a formal structure would help coordinate the service programs all over the country.
Over the years, Sevabharathi has come a long way in servicing its avowed objective. The modest move has culminated into a massive movement. The humble foundation has flowered into a mammoth institution. Today, Sevabharathi has its presence spread across the entire country with an extensive range of charitable and community development activities. Set up in 1989 with moderate means and a canvas of activities, it has grown into an expansive network across. One striking feature of the organization is its commitment for human values and indigenous efforts. The community development model of the organization has been widely acclaimed for its localized focus.
At present, Sevabharathi has its wings all over India, considering human values and helpful for the needy. The volunteers of Sevabharathi today are involved in more than one hundred thousand service projects inremote areas of the country. Volunteers have been the first to reach many natural calamities, be it floods, accidents or other natural calamities such as earthquake or tsunami. Sevabharathiis reported to have 13,786 projects in education,10,908 in health care, 17,560 in social welfare and 7,452 self-reliance projects. Theseprojects, serving the economically weaker and socially neglected sections of the society range from medical assistance, crèche, library, hostel, basic education, adult education, vocational and industrial training, upliftment of street children and the lepers.
